After-tax calculator: what would you keep if you sold everything today?
Enter what you hold — ticker, shares, what you paid and when — and answer three questions about your tax situation. Zyvo prices every position live and works out the federal and state tax on selling all of it today, and what you would keep.
Each position is sold at today’s price. Held for more than a year, the gain is long-term and taxed at 0%, 15% or 20% depending on your income; held for a year or less, it is short-term and taxed at your ordinary rates. Losses are netted against gains first. The 3.8% Net Investment Income Tax is added once your income is above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly), and state tax for the states Zyvo models.
Your other income is taken at the top of the range you pick, so the estimate errs high, never low.
Federal tax = 15% × $40,000 = $6,000
The gain sits entirely in the 15% band, and total income of $160,000 stays below the $200,000 threshold, so no Net Investment Income Tax. State tax comes on top where it applies.
Is this the same engine as the Zyvo app?
Yes. It is the tax engine behind the dashboard's “If you sold everything today” figure, run on the positions you type in instead of a synced portfolio.
How are long-term and short-term gains taxed?
A position held for more than a year is long-term and taxed at 0%, 15% or 20% depending on your income; one held for a year or less is short-term and taxed at your ordinary income-tax rates. Losses are netted against gains first.
Is the Net Investment Income Tax included?
Yes. The 3.8% Net Investment Income Tax applies when your income is above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly), on your investment income or on the excess over the threshold, whichever is smaller.
Which states are covered?
Federal tax for everyone, plus state tax for the states Zyvo models: California, New York, Illinois, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Massachusetts, Arizona, Kentucky, Georgia and Washington (its capital gains tax), and the states with no income tax on gains: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and Wyoming.
Is what I enter saved?
No. Your positions and answers stay on the page; only the ticker symbols are sent out, to look up today’s prices. Close the page and they are gone.
Is this tax advice?
No. It is an estimate to help you plan. Your income is taken at the top of the range you choose, so the estimate errs high rather than low. Check the numbers with a tax professional before you act.
